In Sloan Wilson's popular 1955 novel, The Man in the Gray Suit, protagonist Tom Rath and his family struggle to find meaning in a world increasingly anonymous and corporatized world. Struggling with PTSD from his war service, Tom has to make a choice to essentially kill himself working or abandon his dreams of a middle‐class suburban existence to restore happiness to his life. “The Applicant” is reminiscent of this contemporaneous novel, as the suit—symbolic of the repression and conformity of 1950s culture—is essentially a kind of prison suit that's supposed to protect you from the horrors of the day. But in exchange for safety and protection, you will have to die in that suit, as anonymously as you were while wearing it. The black suit, Plath implies, will not save you.
